Chances, acrylic on canvas, 2022 – 90 cm diameter

“Chances” is part of a group of five circular paintings created for the FUN exhibition in Milan in 2022. Within this body of work, I explored the fusion of colors as if they were sunsets unfolding in slow motion — moments where light dissolves into atmosphere and boundaries quietly disappear.

The circular format became essential. A 90 cm diameter canvas has no corners to interrupt the eye. It invites movement without hierarchy. In “Chances,” color does not sit still; it expands, breathes, and gently shifts across the surface. The composition feels contained and open at the same time — like looking into a horizon without knowing where it begins or ends.

This painting reflects a minimalist intention, but not in the sense of absence. Rather, it is minimal in structure and expansive in sensation. The calmness it evokes is not static; it is alive, subtle, and luminous.

The Fusion of Color as Emotional Landscape

During the creation of this series, I approached color as an emotional field rather than a defined shape. The transitions between tones were developed intuitively, almost like watching the sky change at dusk. One color dissolves into another without rupture. There is no sharp division — only gradual transformation.

The idea of “chance” resonates in this fluidity. Every blending gesture contains unpredictability. Acrylic, when applied in layers, responds differently each time. The outcome is never entirely controlled. That unpredictability became part of the process — an acceptance that beauty often emerges from surrender rather than precision.

The surface may appear simple at first glance, yet it holds depth created through repeated layers and subtle tonal adjustments. What seems calm contains movement; what seems effortless required attentive presence.

Painting as Movement and Joy

This series was created with a sense of play. The act of painting felt almost like dancing. There was rhythm in the gestures, freedom in the repetition, and joy in allowing the colors to interact naturally.

Unlike works built around narrative symbolism, “Chances” emerges from sensation. It does not tell a story in a literal way. Instead, it invites a state of being. The circular format reinforces this feeling of continuity — no beginning, no end, only flow.

The joy present in the making of the painting remains embedded in its atmosphere. Viewers often describe a sense of stillness when standing in front of it, yet that stillness carries warmth. It is not cold minimalism. It is quiet vitality.

The Circular Canvas and Contemporary Minimalism

Working within a round format shifts perception. The eye cannot rest in a corner; it must circulate. This creates a meditative experience. The painting becomes less about composition and more about immersion.

In contemporary art, minimal gestures can hold profound emotional weight. “Chances” participates in that dialogue — not through conceptual complexity, but through presence. It explores how color alone can carry meaning without representation.

The painting belongs to a moment in my practice where simplicity became a conscious exploration. Reducing elements did not mean reducing intensity. It meant focusing attention on what remains essential: light, transition, and atmosphere.

Context Within the FUN Exhibition, Milan (2022)

The FUN exhibition in Milan was an important space for experimentation. The title itself suggests playfulness, and this body of work embraced that spirit. While the exhibition included diverse pieces, these circular paintings formed a cohesive visual meditation.

“Chances” stands as one of the works that best captures that phase: a fusion of discipline and spontaneity. Structured in format, free in execution.
